I love Labor Day <\/strong>weekend, if for no other reason than it means fall is almost here, and fall is my favorite time of the year. Cooler air, colorful trees, falling leaves, football season, apple picking, and so much more. For me, Labor Day feels like the beginning of it all<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But there\u2019s something almost ironic about the way we celebrate Labor Day: we honor our work by taking a day off from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Labor Day weekend approaches, many people are looking forward to an extra day away from their normal responsibilities. Offices will close, schools will pause, families will gather, and some will try to squeeze in one final trip or cookout before summer gives way to fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, for those who serve in ministry, stepping away from our work isn’t always easy. Ministry simply doesn\u2019t fit within the confines of office hours. Sermons still need to be finished. People continue to face crises. Hospital rooms remain occupied. Families experience loss. Volunteers need encouragement, decisions must be made, and Sunday always seems to arrive more quickly than expected. Even after ministry leaders leave the office, the needs of the church often follow them home in their thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this reason, Labor Day offers us an important reminder: the work of ministry may be entrusted to us, but it ultimately belongs to God. While we are called to labor faithfully, we are also called to entrust our work and it’s results to the Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The apostle Paul addressed this as he concluded his great teaching on the resurrection. In 1 Corinthians 15:58, he wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTherefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.\u201d<\/em> –– 1 Corinthians 15:58<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Don’t miss this: Paul describes ministry as LABOR<\/strong><\/span>. This was intentional. He didn\u2019t describe ministry as easy. In fact, the word Paul chose for \u201clabor\u201d<\/strong> is the Greek word \u03ba\u03cc\u03c0\u03bf\u03c2 (kopos<\/em>)<\/strong>. It reflects the idea of strenuous effort, weariness, and toil.<\/em> Paul used this same language elsewhere to describe the demands of ministry. In 1 Thessalonians 2:9, he reminded the believers of his \u201ctoil and hardship,\u201d explaining that he worked night and day while preaching the gospel among them. In 2 Corinthians 11:27, he again spoke of serving Christ through \u201clabor and toil,\u201d often enduring sleeplessness, hunger, and hardship. And that is ministry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul knew the strains and pains of ministry, and he was committed to it. In fact, it was the very mission to which he gave his life. He understood clearly what it meant to pour himself into the work of God. Even so, he offers this wonderful assurance: Labor done in the Lord is never wasted!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are moments in ministry when the results are easy to see. People come to Christ, congregations grow, marriages are restored, young people answer God\u2019s call, and struggling believers find new strength. These are the moments that remind us why we answered the call to ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At other times, the results are much harder to recognize. You preach and wonder whether anyone truly heard the message. You invest in someone who eventually walks away, or pray faithfully for a situation that never seems to change. You continue serving behind the scenes, often with little recognition of the sacrifice involved. Still, you keep showing up, giving, believing, and quietly wondering whether your efforts are making any difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

God\u2019s Word speaks directly to those moments. As Paul puts it: \u201cYour labor in the Lord is not in vain.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s the point: The Lord sees it all!<\/strong> He sees every sermon you prepare, every prayer you pray, every mile you travel, and every act of service, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant. He sees every phone call you make, every hospital visit, every difficult conversation you have, and every decision you wrestle with, especially those that keep you up at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He sees when you arrive early and stay late. He sees the energy you expend as you serve families, widows, and children. He sees when you clean a building or reset a room. He sees when you lead a small group or counsel an individual. Nothing escapes His attention, and nothing given to Christ is ever wasted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As you approach this weekend and the impending Labor Day that will follow, I encourage you to pause and remember that your labor is not in vain. Along with that, I encourage you to pause, disconnect, and rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bible is clear: we weren\u2019t created to work without ceasing. Rest is not the enemy of faithful ministry. In fact, it is one of the ways we acknowledge that the church belongs to Jesus and not to us. We rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Jesus told the disciples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cCome with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.\u201d<\/em> — Mark 6:31<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is stop, breathe, eat a good meal, enjoy time with family, and sleep without feeling guilty. Rest is an expression of trust. It reminds us that God continues working even when we stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps you are entering the weekend tired, disappointed, or questioning whether your work is accomplishing anything. If that is where you find yourself, receive Paul\u2019s words as a personal encouragement from the Lord: stand firm, let nothing move you, and don\u2019t give up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember, your labor in the Lord is not in vain!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

God sees more than you can see. He is working in places you cannot reach and in hearts you cannot fully understand. Your calling is not to carry the entire weight of His church. Your calling is to remain faithful with the work He has placed before you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, labor faithfully. Rest gratefully. But make sure your always TRUST GOD COMPLETELY. Because, the work matters, but it His!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Prayer for Today<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Heavenly Father, I just want to say thanks for the privilege You\u2019ve given me to serve You and to do the work of Your kingdom. I admit it can be hard at times to stay focused and faithful, especially when things are difficult and I become tired. But today, I remind myself that You have called me to find my strength in You. You\u2019ve called me to cast my cares, burdens, and weariness upon You. In response, You\u2019ve promised to carry me, strengthen me, and give me rest. So, I ask You to do that today. Renew my strength, restore my joy, and give me the grace I need to complete the work You\u2019ve called me to do. Help me to labor faithfully and to rest completely in You. I pray this in Jesus\u2019 name, amen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
