Baruch had been faithful to the assignment God had placed before him. He served alongside Jeremiah, wrote down the words God had given the prophet, and helped deliver a message that was anything but popular. He wasn\u2019t running from God\u2019s will. He was standing right in the middle of it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And yet he was miserable. In verse 3<\/strong>, Baruch says,<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWoe to me! The Lord has added sorrow to my pain; I am worn out with groaning and find no rest.\u201d<\/em> — Jeremiah 45:3<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n That\u2019s not the language of someone enjoying the rewards of obedience. That\u2019s the cry of a man who had obeyed God and discovered that obedience could still be costly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I think we really need to be careful about the conclusions we draw when life becomes difficult. Hard circumstances don\u2019t necessarily mean we missed God. Opposition doesn\u2019t always mean we made the wrong decision. Disappointment isn\u2019t proof that we misunderstood His direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes the difficult road is the very road obedience requires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Throughout Scripture, faithful people repeatedly discovered this. Joseph obeyed God and ended up in prison. Moses obeyed God and faced constant resistance. Jeremiah obeyed God and was rejected. Paul followed God\u2019s call and encountered hardship almost everywhere he went.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And of course, Jesus perfectly obeyed the Father, yet His obedience led Him all the way to the cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So we shouldn\u2019t assume that obedience will always produce comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes obedience costs us something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It may cost convenience, approval, opportunity, familiarity, or the future we had imagined for ourselves. There may even be seasons when we quietly wonder,\u00a0\u201cLord, I did what You asked. Why is this still so hard?\u201d<\/em> Baruch understood that question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One of our greatest temptations in difficult seasons is to evaluate God\u2019s direction by the condition of the road. If things are going well, we assume God must be pleased. If circumstances become difficult, we begin questioning whether we heard Him correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But Scripture doesn\u2019t give us that measuring stick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The better question isn\u2019t always,\u00a0\u201cIs this easy?\u201d<\/strong> It\u2019s\u00a0\u201cAm I being faithful?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n There is a tremendous difference between those two questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes an easy road can take us places God never intended for us to go. And conversely, a difficult road may lead us directly through the center of His will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Baruch\u2019s circumstances were difficult, but God had not abandoned him. In fact, God spoke directly into his discouragement and reminded him that there was a much larger story unfolding than the one Baruch could presently see. His hardship wasn\u2019t meaningless. And neither is ours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There are moments when obedience feels incredibly rewarding. You can see what God is doing, doors open, prayers are answered, and everything seems to confirm the decision you made. Then there are other seasons when obedience feels like simply putting one foot in front of the other. You keep praying when nothing seems to change. You keep serving when no one notices. You continue doing what is right even when it would be easier to compromise. You remain faithful because you know God has called you to it, not because the circumstances are rewarding you for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That kind of obedience has depth. And perhaps that is one of the clearest expressions of faith we can offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe you are in a season where doing the right thing has turned out to be harder than you expected. Don\u2019t automatically assume the difficulty means you are on the wrong road. Go back to what God has spoken. Examine your heart. Seek His wisdom. Listen carefully to the Holy Spirit and the truth of His Word. And if you know you are walking where He has called you to walk, keep going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The goal of the Christian life was never to find the easiest road available. It is to follow Jesus faithfully wherever He leads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So, keep trusting Jesus. And, keep following His lead!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me that obedience doesn\u2019t always guarantee an easy road. Help me not to measure Your will by my comfort or assume that difficulty means You have abandoned me. Give me wisdom to recognize Your direction and courage to remain faithful when following You becomes costly. When the road is harder than I expected, strengthen my trust in You and help me keep walking in obedience. Above all, let my life reflect a faith that follows You not only when the way is easy, but wherever You lead.
