{"id":1319,"date":"2025-03-04T21:21:30","date_gmt":"2025-03-04T21:21:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chuckhilltoday.com\/?page_id=1319"},"modified":"2025-12-15T20:01:52","modified_gmt":"2025-12-15T20:01:52","slug":"eliminating-apathy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/chuckhilltoday.com\/index.php\/eliminating-apathy\/","title":{"rendered":"ELIMINATING APATHY"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><strong>Eliminating Apathy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2 Samuel 11:1-5<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>INTRODUCTION:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve all felt it at some point\u2014<em>that tendency to care less, to disengage, to go through the motions without passion or purpose.<\/em>&nbsp;It\u2019s called&nbsp;<strong>apathy<\/strong>\u2014a state of indifference, a lack of enthusiasm, a condition where nothing really moves us anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apathy is dangerous in any area of life. It affects relationships, careers, and personal growth. But nowhere is it more destructive than in our&nbsp;<strong>walk with Christ<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus spoke directly to this spiritual indifference when He addressed the church in Laodicea:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-2-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-955b83c037125b918942b090b020b98c\"><strong><em>15\u00a0\u201c<\/em><\/strong><em>I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. <\/em><strong><em>Would that you were either <\/em><\/strong><em>cold or hot! <\/em><strong><em>16\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><em>So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><strong>Revelation 3:15-16 (ESV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Is there anything worse than a mouthful of \u201clukewarm\u201d anything?<\/strong> The imagery is striking\u2014Jesus is so repulsed by spiritual apathy that He says He will &#8220;spit&#8221; the lukewarm out of His mouth. He\u2019s not indifferent to our indifference!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This message is a call to&nbsp;<strong>awaken from apathy<\/strong>\u2014to recognize the symptoms of spiritual lethargy and to rekindle the fire of passion for Christ. Because&nbsp;<strong>a lukewarm faith is a powerless faith<\/strong>, and if we\u2019re not careful, we can drift into a place where we are merely existing rather than truly living for Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So let\u2019s examine&nbsp;<strong>how apathy creeps in, why it\u2019s so dangerous, and how we can reignite a burning love for Jesus.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a9fd0ff70ec63f2e2c6bd29d704ed196\" style=\"color:#330a71\">Yesterday Lori and I were at Barnes and Nobles, and I wanted a cup of coffee and she wanted a hot chai. And I have to say, her chai was so hot it nearly burned my tongue. But my coffee was just barely tepid. I drank it \u2014 but it wasn\u2019t good! Just as a cup of coffee can be hot one moment and then lukewarm the next, so also can our passion for God and His presence drift into a state of \u201clukewarmness.\u201d But Jesus warns us to not allow this to happen.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This morning, I invite your to turn with me to the Old Testament book of 2 Samuel as we discover an awful moment in the life of King David, when just such a shift took place within him. Look with me at chapter 11. It\u2019s here that we find the story of that time when Israel\u2019s army marched to the battlefield alone. They were at war \u2014 but their Commander In Chief was not with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of <strong>APATHY<\/strong>, <strong>David<\/strong> abandoned His calling. Instead, of leading his people, he sent someone else \u2014 while he stayed home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>2 Samuel 11:1<\/strong>, <strong>David<\/strong> <strong>settles for<\/strong> <strong>complacency<\/strong> <strong>over<\/strong> <strong>calling<\/strong>! If you\u2019ve got your <strong>bibles<\/strong> \u2014 follow along as I read. It says,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-2-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-15aa17b420ab950e3f9a7810d2874f6c\"><strong><em>1 \u201c<\/em><\/strong><em>In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem. <strong>2<\/strong> It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king&#8217;s house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful. <\/em><strong><em>3<\/em><\/strong><em> And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, \u201cIs not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?\u201d <\/em><strong><em>4<\/em><\/strong><em> So <\/em><strong><em>David<\/em><\/strong><em> sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he lay with her. (Now she had been purifying herself from her uncleanness.) Then she returned to her house. <\/em><strong><em>5<\/em><\/strong><em> And the woman conceived, and she sent and told David, \u201cI am pregnant.\u201d<\/em> <strong>2 Samuel 11:1-5 (ESV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What an awful story. <\/strong>Its really the worst kind of story isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the story that <strong>magazines<\/strong> and <strong>newspapers<\/strong> and <strong>radio<\/strong> <strong>shows<\/strong> love to tell. But it\u2019s just awful! It\u2019s the <strong>story of demise<\/strong>. The <strong>story of failure<\/strong> and the abuse of power. It\u2019s the story of <strong>sin\u2019s effort<\/strong> to dethrone <strong>God\u2019s King.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <strong>2 Samuel 11<\/strong> \u2014 it was <strong>springtime<\/strong> when <strong>kings<\/strong> go out to <strong>battle<\/strong>. But where was <strong>David<\/strong>? He wasn\u2019t on the battlefield. He wasn\u2019t leading his army. He wasn\u2019t fighting the enemy. He was laying on his <strong>couch<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He may have been the first real <strong>\u201cCOUCH POTATO!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And what a terrible thing to be known for. That\u2019s not a term we use for leaders. It\u2019s a term for the <strong>lazy<\/strong>. The <strong>slothful<\/strong>. The <strong>weak<\/strong> and <strong>selfish<\/strong>. But that\u2019s what <strong>David<\/strong> had become at this point in his life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a quote that says <strong>\u201cApathy comes before calamity.\u201d <\/strong>Apathy and complacency are perhaps the most destructive heart conditions of all. And this <strong>sad story of sin<\/strong> and failure all happened because <strong>David<\/strong> welcomed <strong>APATHY<\/strong> into his life!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MESSAGE:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, <strong>what can you learn from this story<\/strong>? What does this story teach you about <strong>standing strong <\/strong>and <strong>eliminating the monster of apathy<\/strong>?&nbsp; Well, it reminds you to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><strong>1. NEVER ABANDON YOUR ASSIGNMENT!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>David abandoned his assignment:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>1 \u201c<\/em><\/strong><em>In the spring of the year, <\/em><strong><em>the time when kings go out to battle<\/em><\/strong><em>, David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they ravaged the <\/em><strong><em>Ammonites<\/em><\/strong><em> and besieged <\/em><strong><em>Rabbah<\/em><\/strong><em>. <\/em><em>But David remained at Jerusalem.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>EVERYONE HAS A DIVINE ASSIGNMENT TO ATTEND TO! <\/strong>For <strong>David<\/strong> it was to lead his nation in battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you\u2019re <strong>married<\/strong>, then your divine assignment will include the guarding of your <strong>marriage<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It will be to lead your <strong>family in faith<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you\u2019re a <strong>parent<\/strong> \u2014 it will be to protect your <strong>children <\/strong>and<strong> introduce them to Jesus.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you own a business, then your assignment will include the governing of your <strong>business<\/strong> (and the way you handle your work)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All of us have the divine assignment of guarding our <strong>reputation<\/strong>, and protecting our <strong>integrity<\/strong>, and strengthening our <strong>relationships with Christ<\/strong> and <strong>others<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you <strong>lead a ministry <\/strong>or <strong>serve in a ministry <\/strong>\u2014 then you part of <strong>your divine assignment <\/strong>is to attend to that <strong>Minsitry<\/strong> with <strong>faithfulness<\/strong> and <strong>integrity<\/strong> and <strong>passion<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But whatever your calling or assignment \u2014 <strong>fulfilling that change <\/strong>with passion and enthusiasm<strong>!<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-2-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-928695d18863dd58dc0bad1265a887c7\"><strong>Solomon<\/strong> said, <em>\u201cWhatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<strong>Ecclesiastes 9:10 (ESV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, guard that sacred responsibility and never abandon your post. Be careful not to waste the opportunities to which God has called you and entrusted to you!\u00a0In this story, we see that <strong>David abdicated his calling<\/strong> in exchange for <strong>his<\/strong> <strong>comfort<\/strong>. And this was sin. <strong>Apathy is sin! <\/strong>So, reject it!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Never allow the couch to replace your calling!<\/strong> Never abandon your assignment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Secondly, this story teaches you . . .&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><strong>2. NEVER ALLOW A BAD DECISION TO DEFINE YOU!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This story of<strong> David\u2019s sin nearly DEFINED Him for all of History!&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, <strong>David<\/strong> didn\u2019t stay there \u2014 he repented and return to the things of God. But this story reminds us to never allow a bad decision to define our lives. Instead, we should heed the words of the late <strong>Eugene<\/strong> <strong>Peterson<\/strong> and practice living our lives with <strong>\u201ca long obedience in the same direction.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bible tells us that <strong>David<\/strong> would ultimately be known as a <em>\u201cman after God\u2019s own heart<\/em>\u201d \u2014but in the wake of this<strong> awful failure<\/strong>, <strong>David<\/strong> struggled to rebuild his reputation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the thing we must remember \u2014 <strong>sin can be forgiven<\/strong>, but <strong>its consequences are painful!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a season of <strong>great success<\/strong>, <strong>David<\/strong> lost his appetite for leading and choose to skip out on His army. Remember, at this point in his life \u2014 <strong>David<\/strong> had everything:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>He had defeated <strong>Goliath<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He had won the <strong>hearts<\/strong> <strong>of the people.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He had ascended to the<strong> throne of<\/strong> <strong>Israel<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He had <strong>established his kingdom<\/strong> in the land.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He had <strong>secured Jerusalem<\/strong> as the capital city.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He had <strong>defeated nearly all of Israel\u2019s enemies<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He had <strong>recovered the Ark of the Covenant <\/strong>(God\u2019s presence) and brought it home.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He <strong>had wealth, <\/strong>and <strong>homes<\/strong>, and <strong>wives<\/strong>, and <strong>children<\/strong>, and <strong>the envy of every one.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But in the wake of all of this success \u2014 <strong>he settled for the couch!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Never forget this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Apathy often follows great success!&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And what is true for an <strong>individual<\/strong> is also true for a <strong>local<\/strong> <strong>church<\/strong>. May we never settle on the <strong>couch<\/strong> <strong>of<\/strong> <strong>comfort<\/strong> (lest we begin our downward fall from God\u2019s purpose). May we always be risk-takers, and faith-walkers, and dreamers. May we keep praying dangerous prayers and believing God for GREATER THINGS!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>May we never cease to pursue His presence and become indifferent to the lost. May we always live up the the level of our calling and <strong><em>\u201ccelebrate God\u2019s love by persuading people to become passionate followers of Christ!\u201d <\/em><\/strong>(AMEN?!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, look with me again at <strong>verse two<\/strong>. It says: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-2-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-eb6eb19f18d83d06336452dbc493c49d\"><em>\u201cI<strong>t<\/strong> happened, late one afternoon . . .\u201d<\/em> <strong>2 Samuel 11:2<\/strong> <strong>(ESV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What happened?<strong><em>APATHY HAPPENED! <\/em><\/strong>And <strong>David <\/strong><strong>settled for the couch<\/strong>rather than his calling!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>It<\/em><\/strong><em>\u2014led to the <\/em><strong><em>worst <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>moment<\/em><\/strong><em> of his life.<\/em><strong><em> It<\/em><\/strong><em>\u2014was the <\/em><strong><em>most <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>regrettable <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>decision<\/em><\/strong><em> he\u2019d ever make!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone has an IT they\u2019d like to forget! Those moments we wish we could erase from our past. We\u2019ve all made bad decisions or reacted poorly, responded inappropriately, embraced apathy and acted with indifference. The thing is, we must leave them in the past and ensure that APATHY and those bad moments never enter our present of future. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the way we do this is to guard our hearts and minds. Because sin first begins as a thought \u2014 or a wrong-desire. Those \u201cIT\u201d moments never just appear overnight. They first begin as a selfish thought that grows into ungodly desires. And when ungodly desires dominate our thinking \u2014 they lead us into sin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-sitetext-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-14351a55d8462db16213716eaff770ba\"><strong>James 1:15<\/strong> says, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-2-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-89576a7ee8cb1c338c0f6cad1da9104d\"><em>\u201c\u2026after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.\u201d<\/em> <strong>James 1:15 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>David<\/strong> didn\u2019t get taken out in the <strong>shepherding fields<\/strong> when he was a boy fighting a lion or bear.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>He didn\u2019t get taken out when he was <strong>a teenager on a battlefield <\/strong>having to fight single handedly against a nine-foot tall <strong>Philistine<\/strong> <strong>giant<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>He didn\u2019t get taken out as <strong>a young man<\/strong> by his <strong>best friend\u2019s dad<\/strong> who betrayed him and tried to kill him over and over again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>And he didn\u2019t get taken out by <strong>one of the many waring armies<\/strong> confronting him on the battle field.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>No, <strong>he was taken out by an apathetic desire <\/strong>that led him first to the <strong>couch<\/strong>, and then to his roof-top (where he watched <strong>Bathsheba<\/strong> bathe). <strong>David\u2019s<\/strong> sin first began as selfish thoughts and ungodly desires. <strong>Eliminate apathy at all costs!<\/strong> Don\u2019t allow a bad decision to define you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, this story teaches you to . . .&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2014 Never allow a bad decision to define you.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2014 Never abandon your assignment.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And Lastly, this story teaches you to . . .&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><strong>3. AVOID TEMPTATION AT ALL COSTS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The great tragedy of this story is that <strong>David<\/strong> failed to avoid the temptation. One sin led to another. Look again at <strong>verse 3-4:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>3 And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, \u201cIs not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?\u201d 4 So David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he lay with her.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One sin led to another. Listen, it\u2019s always easier to avoiding temptation than it is to try and defeat it!&nbsp; An <strong>ancient chinese proverb<\/strong> says, &#8221;He who would not fall, should not walk in slippery places\u2019&#8217; <strong>Martin Luther<\/strong> once said, &#8221;If your head is made of butter, stay away from the fire.\u2019&#8217; Both of these statements <strong>affirm<\/strong> is <strong>a life of wisdom<\/strong> . . . avoid temptation at all costs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What began with apathy in David\u2019s life \u2014 ultimately led him to breaking nearly half the 10 commandments. He coveted his neighbor\u2019s wife, he committed adultery, he lied about his sin, and he eventually murdered a man to\u00a0 cover it up.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>T<strong>hat\u2019s the snare of sin. So what should we do? God tells us to avoid it at all costs. Jesus put it this way, He said,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-2-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-fd5f1c8c7c332106ee8ea0aa7b19d67e\"><strong><em>41\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><em>\u201cWatch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.\u201d<\/em> <strong>Matthew 26:41 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Temptations are real \u2014 and <\/strong><strong>one of the worst<\/strong><strong> is that of APATHY?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is always tempting to trade in <strong>responsibility<\/strong> for <strong>laziness<\/strong>. <strong>Purpose<\/strong> for <strong>boredom<\/strong>. Or <strong>passion<\/strong> for <strong>indifference<\/strong>. But don\u2019t do it! Resist that temptation \u2014 eliminate <strong>apathy<\/strong> at all costs! So how can we do that?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How can we protect ourselves from the tendency to become apathetic?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019d suggest you <strong>build up your defenses<\/strong> and <strong>increase your strength and passion for<\/strong> <strong>God<\/strong>. One of the best ways to do that is to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2014 <strong>Study God\u2019s Word!<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>psalmist<\/strong> writes, <em>\u201cI have stored up your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Psalm 119:11 (ESV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>passion<\/strong> <strong>for God<\/strong> is really the <strong>opposite of spiritual apathy.<\/strong> And one of the best ways to become <strong>passionate about God<\/strong> and <strong>His Kingdom <\/strong>is to get to know Him more. No way to better accomplish this than to become familiar with <strong>His Word.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Lori and I were dating I wanted her to know and love me, and so I wrote her LOTS of letters. I would fold them up and sometimes spray them with my cologne. I would stick pieces of Big Red chewing gum in them (because the commercial tag line for that gum was \u2014 \u201ckiss a little longer\u201d). Come on!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Listen, I wrote her because I loved her. And I wanted her to read my letters and fall passionately in love with me. AND SHE DID!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And what is true in the natural is also true in the spiritual. If you want to know God and fall passionately in love with Him, then <strong>READ HIS WORD!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Paul<\/strong> said,<em>\u201cStudy to show yourself approved. A workman who doesn\u2019t need to be ashamed.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Another way to eliminate apathy from your life is to:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2014 <strong>Seek God\u2019s Presence!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Practice the presence of God:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Don\u2019t be content to just know about God \u2014 <strong>pursue Him.<\/strong> Fill your mind with thoughts about Him. <strong>Meditate<\/strong> <strong>on what you\u2019re studying<\/strong> in His Word.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sing songs of praise<\/strong> to Him.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Speak to Him in prayer.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Worship Him<\/strong> with your whole heart \u2014 not just empty words.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dedicate time to honoring Him<\/strong>. And if you feel distant from Him, I assure you He hasn\u2019t moved away from you. But maybe you\u2019ve pulled away from Him.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It could be that there is sin present in your life that needs to be confessed. If you\u2019re a believer and you feel distant from <strong>God<\/strong> \u2014 ask <strong>God<\/strong> to search you and see if there is anything you\u2019ve got in your life that needs to be removed. And if so, <strong>ask Him to cleanse and renew your passion for Him<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When <strong>David<\/strong> sinned, he felt separated from God too, and in <strong>Psalm 51<\/strong> he wrote out his prayer of confession and repentance. And in <strong>verse 10-11<\/strong> he said this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-2-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f3bb16ad8fc9ff28288e22e059a84a90\"><strong><em>10<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right[a] spirit within me.<\/em> <strong><em>11<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.\u00a0<\/em> <strong><em>12<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.<\/em> <strong>Psalm 51:10-12 (ESV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2014 <strong>Devote yourself to Kingdom matters!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to avoid <strong>apathy<\/strong> and <strong>living with a<\/strong> <strong>bored soul, then:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; <strong>Get involved in God\u2019s work.<\/strong> For David, this was leadership. God had called him to lead and placed him on the throne of Israel to lead the charge in battle. But he chose to sit on the couch rather than stand up for God\u2019s people. In essence, he abdicated his calling in exchange for comfort.And this was sin.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t follow David\u2019s example \u2014 fulfill your calling for the glory of God Become actively involved on the front lines of ministry \u2014 get involved, serve, volunteer, lead \u2014 give of your time and talents and treasures to the things of God. Don\u2019t waste your life on yourself \u2014 invest it for the Kingdom of God!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2014 Surround yourself with the Godly people!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be careful who\u2019s voice you allow to speak into your life. The <strong>Bible<\/strong> says,<em> \u201cGuard your heart \u2014 for it\u2019s the well-spring of life.\u201d <\/em>Be careful who you allow to speak into your heart.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you <strong>dating<\/strong> \u2014 don\u2019t date those who don\u2019t serve the Lord.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are <strong>going<\/strong> <strong>into<\/strong> <strong>business<\/strong> with someone \u2014 don\u2019t go into business with an unbeliever.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And if you\u2019re going to <strong>find a close friend<\/strong> \u2014 choose wisely.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Paul<\/strong> said in <strong>1 Corinthians 15:33, <\/strong><em>\u201cDo not be deceived: \u201cBad company ruins good morals.\u201d<\/em> <strong>(ESV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of you know my <strong>two best friends<\/strong> throughout most of my life have been men of character (<strong>Stephen Morgan<\/strong> and <strong>Carlos Ramirez<\/strong>). But I\u2019ve learned\u2014 if you surround yourself with and make your closest friends those who aren\u2019t serving <strong>Jesus<\/strong> \u2014 they will influence you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Thankfully, my <strong>two closest friends<\/strong> through my life are <strong>men who love the Lord<\/strong> and continue to sow good seeds into my life. They are men I can count on to hold me <strong>accountable. <\/strong>And I\u2019ve found that <strong>accountability helps me avoid sin<\/strong>. And it will you as well.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we are accountable to both <strong>God<\/strong> and man \u2014 we are empowered to <strong>overcome the temptation to sin <\/strong>\u2014 and the <strong>tendency to embrace apathy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do your life with others. <strong>Commit your way <\/strong>to <strong>Christ<\/strong> and then surround yourself with those who will build you up.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The wisdom writer tells us in <strong>Proverbs 27:17, <\/strong><em>\u201cAs iron sharpens iron . . . one person sharpens another.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Proverbs 27:17 (ESV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><strong>Closing&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we are going to live an abundant life in Christ \u2014 then we must eliminate apathy from our lives. We must make sure that Christ and His purposes always overshadow the couch within our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And we must . . .&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2014 Never abandon your spiritual callings.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2014 Never allow our poor choices to define us.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2014 And always seek to avoid temptation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><strong>Prayer:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Would you bow your heads and pray with me as we close?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I never want to end our time without <strong>giving you the opportunity to surrender your life to Jesus.<\/strong> Ultimately, <strong>He is the answer to all of our struggles and problems<\/strong> \u2014 especially our <strong>sin<\/strong> problem. So, if you\u2019re here today and <strong>you want to experience the wonder of salvation<\/strong>, would you pray with me today?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-00d7648690729851ca91eff44c747d38\" style=\"color:#870808\">Heavenly Father, I am tired of living for myself and I don\u2019t want to live another day without you. I confess that I am a sinner in need of a savior. I put my trust and faith in you Jesus. Would you forgive me and save me \u2014 and fill me with your Spirit. From this day on (as you give me strength), I will live for you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-99ec5300668d1b1c9e7a3725fccf7ab4\" style=\"color:#870808\">In Jesus name I pray \u2014 Amen!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>And now for the rest of us:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-438be9142244b9dfff01d07dac737ef8\" style=\"color:#850505\">Lord we are so grateful for the stories faith like we\u2019ve studied today, which remind us of who we are and to whom we belong. May we never succumb to the temptation to be indifferent or apathetic in our service to you. May we always live with passion and the pursuit of your presence. Help us to give our best to you and rely upon you to accomplish the purpose for which we\u2019ve been called.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-49b94c4378a1ead145aaeec1d64f82c2\" style=\"color:#850505\">Help us as a church to grow in number and effectiveness.
