How are we doing today? It’s so good to be with you. I’m so glad you’ve chosen to start your week by gathering together to worship the Lord with us. It’s my hope that God will speak to you in the next few moments as we study His Word together.

You know…Sometimes life can really press in on us! Have you ever felt like that? Maybe you’re walking through a season where nothing seems to be going right. The pressure is intense, the burden is heavy, and you wonder if God sees what you’re going through.

We all face seasons like this—times when we feel trapped in situations we didn’t choose, struggling under burdens we never expected. It’s in these moments that we often question God’s plan. We wonder why He allows hardship, why He permits suffering, and why He doesn’t step in sooner.

Yet, over and over in Scripture, we see a pattern emerge: God often does His greatest work in the hardest places.

The moments that feel like setbacks are often setups for something greater. The seasons of affliction are often the places of multiplication, growth, and revival.

This is exactly what we see in the story of the Israelites in Exodus 1.

If you have your Bible, turn their with me.

9 “Look,” he said to his people, “the Israelites have become far too numerous for us. 10 Come, we must deal shrewdly with them or they will become even more numerous, and, if war breaks out, will join our enemies, fight against us, and leave the country.” 11 So they put slave masters over them to oppress them with forced labor, and they built Pithom and Rameses as store cities for Pharaoh. 12 But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites.

Exodus 1:9-12 (NIV)

As scripture indicates, the people found themselves in the most difficult season of their history (up to that point). They were oppressed, enslaved, and burdened under the rule of Pharaoh. But rather than being destroyed by the pressure, the pressure to lead to their multiplication. Instead of shrinking back, they grew stronger. Instead of being silenced, their cries reached the heavens, and God was preparing their deliverance.

Could it be that the same is true for us? Could it be that the hard place is not the end of the story, but the very place where God’s glory is revealed?

1. Realize Affliction Can Lead to Multiplication

This is not just a comforting thought; it is a spiritual principle woven throughout Scripture and history. What looks like limitation is often God’s hidden strategy for expansion.

When Pharaoh saw that the Israelites were increasing in number, he became fearful. He saw their growth as a threat, and his response was to enslave them. His goal was to break them, weaken them, and limit their influence. But the exact opposite happened.

Verse 12 tells us: “But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread.”

This is how God works. What the enemy intends for harm, God turns for good. Oppression, rather than weakening the Israelites, caused them to grow. The pressure that was meant to crush them actually refined them. In God’s economy, pressure often produces increase. Egypt’s chains became Israel’s catalyst. Their suffering did not stop their destiny; it accelerated it. The womb of affliction became the cradle of multiplication.

This pattern isn’t just seen in Exodus. We see it throughout history.

Look at the early church. When persecution arose in the book of Acts, believers were scattered. But scattering was not scattering to silence — it was scattering to sow. Like seed carried by the wind, the Gospel took root in places it would have never reached if the church had stayed comfortable in Jerusalem. What looked like disruption was actually divine distribution.

Consider Paul and Silas in prison. Their backs were bleeding, their feet were fastened, their future uncertain. Yet instead of asking “Why is this happening to us?” they asked, in effect, “How can God be glorified here?” Their worship in the dark became a weapon. Heaven responded, the earth shook, chains broke, and a jailer’s household was saved. Their pain became someone else’s doorway to salvation.

Here is the deeper spiritual insight:

God often multiplies us in the very place the enemy tries to minimize us.

Joseph was betrayed before he was promoted.

David was hunted before he was crowned.

Jesus was crucified before He was glorified.

The pattern of scripture is consistent:

Burial precedes breakthrough. Pressure precedes promotion. Affliction precedes fruitfulness.

So when you find yourself in a hard season, don’t assume God has abandoned you. Sometimes the place that feels like confinement is actually cultivation. God may be growing something in you that could not grow any other way — deeper faith, stronger character, greater authority, wider influence.

Ask yourself: What if this pressure is not punishment… but preparation?

What if the hard place you’re in right now is actually the birthplace of something powerful?

Well this leads us to another powerful truth, we must:

2. Remember God is Always Refining His People

It is human nature to pray, “Lord, take this away.” We want relief, answers, resolution. Yet throughout Scripture, God often answers a different prayer — not by removing the fire, but by redeeming it. He knows something we forget: fire does not only burn; it also purifies.

In Revelation 19:7 tells us:

“For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready.” — Revelation 19:7

In Revelation 19:7, we are given a breathtaking picture of destiny: the Bride made ready for the Bridegroom. The church is not merely waiting for Christ’s return; she is being prepared for it. Preparation implies process. Readiness implies refining. God is not just interested in rescuing His people — He is committed to transforming them.

Throughout Scripture, God’s pattern is consistent:

Gold is refined in fire, not in comfort.

Faith is strengthened in testing, not in ease.

Character is formed in pressure, not in popularity.

Refining always involves removal. Impurities must surface before they can be skimmed away. That’s why seasons of pressure often expose things in us we didn’t know were there — fear, pride, impatience, misplaced trust. These moments are not signs that God has abandoned us; they are evidence that He is working deeply within us.

Even now, many discern a spiritual sifting taking place in the church. Some grow weary. Some drift. Some allow distraction to dull their devotion. But others respond differently — they lean in, press deeper, pray harder, worship louder, trust stronger. The same fire touches both groups, yet it produces two very different outcomes.

The difference is not the fire.
The difference is the response.

If we run from refining, we may escape discomfort, but we also miss transformation. If we resist God’s work, we may delay pain, but we also delay purpose. Yet when we surrender to His process — even when it is hard, confusing, or prolonged — we discover that God never wastes a trial. Every flame has intention. Every pressure has purpose. Every season has a shaping.

Remember this truth:

God does not refine His people to destroy them. He refines them to display them.

Just as a jeweler heats gold until it reflects his image, God allows refining until His image is seen more clearly in us. He is preparing a people who reflect His holiness, carry His presence, and are ready for His appearing.

So if you find yourself in a refining season, do not lose heart. The fire you feel is not meant to consume you — it is meant to complete you. And when God finishes His work, what emerges will be stronger than what entered the flame: purer faith, deeper love, steadier hope, and a life that shines with the glory of Christ.

3. What if your faithfulness in the hard place helps someone else see the power of God?

Ask yourself: How can I use my current situation to glorify God and encourage others?

5.
