Celebrating the Next Generation
Reflections from the Sights and Sounds of Youth Camp
Last night Lori and I visited River Oaks Retreat Center, the campground owned by our fellowship here in South Carolina. It happened to be the third incredible week of our summer youth camps. As I stood near the back of the large gym where their worship services are held, my heart was filled with gratitude and deep awe. I watched as hundreds of middle and high school students flooded the altars, worshiping powerfully and praying passionately. Even after the service ended, they remained—continuing to worship and pray with sincerity—well past 11 p.m.
What I witnessed was nothing short of amazing. Young people were authentically pursuing the tangible presence of God. Tears of joy streamed down the faces of some students, while others lifted their hands heavenward, eyes closed, boldly declaring the greatness of God with shouts of praise. I saw groups of young men laying hands on one another, earnestly praying blessings and courage over their friends. Equally moving were the circles of young women kneeling together, interceding passionately for one another.

This profound spiritual moment followed a powerful and challenging message from our gifted camp speaker—a dynamic evangelist who spoke clearly about the love of God, the reality of His presence, and His promise to remain with those who trust Him fully. It was undeniably encouraging and uplifting.
Afterward, I had the honor of meeting with more than 30 students who acknowledged what they sensed to be a clear and distinct call from God to vocational ministry. As I looked around the group, my heart swelled with excitement and deep joy. It is a beautiful thing to witness the next generation willingly surrendering their lives and future plans to God’s calling and purposes.
In reflecting today, I am reminded of Paul’s encouragement to Timothy:
“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” —1 Timothy 4:12
This scripture compels us as pastors, leaders, and mentors to stand alongside, pray fervently for, believe deeply in, and actively celebrate the next generation as they passionately pursue godliness. Their zeal should not only inspire but also challenge us to wholeheartedly embrace our sacred responsibility: preparing the way and equipping them to fulfill their God-given destinies.
May we never underestimate our role in shaping the spiritual trajectory of those coming behind us. Let’s champion their growth, guide their steps, and affirm their calling. Our investment in their lives today will echo throughout eternity.
A Prayer for the Next Generation and Us (as Leaders)
Heavenly Father, thank You for raising up a generation hungry for Your presence and committed to Your purposes. We celebrate their passion and dedication, and we pray that You would guard their hearts, strengthen their resolve, and clarify their callings. Surround them with faithful mentors who will guide them with wisdom and love. Help us, as pastors and leaders, to steward this sacred responsibility well—encouraging, equipping, and empowering these young lives for Your glory. May they be steadfast in faith, unwavering in purpose, and mighty in influence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
