Trusting God with Your Calling

Trusting God with Your Calling

God not only creates life; He gives it direction. Long before you took your first breath, He was at work, shaping and forming you with His purposes in mind. In Psalm 139:13, the psalmist declares,

With these words, we are reminded that our lives (our gifts, interests, and even the unique bents of our personalities), carry the divine fingerprints of our Creator. His point is clear—you are neither an accident nor an afterthought Your life was intentionally planned and crafted for His glory.

At the core, every Christ-follower shares a calling and a purpose to fulfill. In short, it’s to live a life that honors God, to use the gifts and opportunities we have to reflect His love, and to share the hope we have in Jesus with a world in need. This calling should shape how we approach our daily work, how we care for our families, how we speak to our children, how we encourage our neighbors, and how we steward the resources and moments God has entrusted to us. In every season and in every place, we are called to serve Him and to make Him known.

Yet for some, God places a deeper burden upon the heart—a holy summons to proclaim His Word, shepherd His people, and advance the mission of the gospel as a primary life pursuit. We often call this a “call to ministry,” but it is perhaps better described as a call to serve God’s people with your life. This is not defined by a paycheck, a job title, or the size of a platform, but by a surrendered heart that says, “Lord, here I am. Use me.” Calling is not determined by position; it is bigger, broader, and far more special than those limited measures, rooted in your identity as God’s servant and your willingness to walk in His purposes wherever He leads.

The apostle Paul described his calling this way:

Even before Paul’s education under Gamaliel or his zealous persecution of the church, God had set him apart. Every chapter of Paul’s story, even the broken ones, became part of God’s preparation for what was to come.

It is the same for you. Your story, your journey, your shaping—all of it matters in God’s hands.

We often make plans about where we will serve or what we will do next, but as Proverbs 16:9 reminds us,

His calling on your life does not change, but the assignments along the way may shift as He leads you where you can be most effective for His purposes.

Early in my ministry, my greatest influence was with students and young people. Over time, God shifted my influence toward adults, families, and leaders. Today, I find myself entrusted with the assignment of serving and leading pastors and ministry leaders. Through each of these seasons, the calling to serve Him with my life has not changed, but the steps along the journey have been ordered by Him—often in ways I could not have planned or predicted. It has reminded me that calling is not defined by a title or position. It is the holy privilege of allowing God to use your life for His purposes wherever He leads you, in whatever assignment He places in your hands.

Whatever season of ministry you find yourself in, and whatever assignment God has placed in your hands right now, remember this, pastor and leader: you matter. Your faithfulness matters. Your “yes” matters. God sees your willingness to serve, your steady faithfulness in small and unseen places, your late nights and early mornings, your quiet acts of obedience, and your courage to keep following Him even when the path ahead feels uncertain.

You have already responded to the call to proclaim God’s Word and shepherd His people. Let me remind you: carry that calling with holy awe. It is no small thing that the God of the universe has entrusted you with His message and with the care of His people. Let that reality move you to gratitude and reverence each day you have the privilege to lead, preach, disciple, and care for those He has placed under your ministry. Your calling is sacred. Your assignment is significant. And your faithfulness in this season is making an eternal difference.

Take a Moment to Reflect

Pause and consider the uniqueness of your journey. God has been with you and for you in every step, every shift, every assignment. Take a moment to thank Him for His faithfulness and to recognize the privilege of serving His people. Ask Him to show you where He is calling you to trust Him anew and to step forward with fresh obedience and courage today.

This year is my 50th in ordained ministry and the 44th this month with the same precious church family. I’ve never been more grateful for God’s calling and His anointing to do “the work of the ministry”! When my wife and I began our traveling Evangelistic ministry right out of Bible School, we were convinced that our God Given Giftings, would best be used as Evangelists, and being PK’s we never wanted to Pastor. Watching our faithful fathers give their lives to local church bodies, only to be treated rudely and taken for granted, had caused us extreme pain. Every year our dads would be voted on as to their success or failure in the eyes of the congregants. In my father’s last pastorate, after 7 years of $100 a week salary, the board fought for 2 hours on whether or not to give him a $5 a week raise? He got the raise and a board member stormed off mad and resigned. Dad gave them 7 more years before retiring. I knew I didn’t have the giftings to “Pastor”! However, when God directed us toward this Pastorate, after 5 years of evangelism and two years of Associate Pastor position in Georgia…we prayed hour by hour for wisdom, grace and love to be a shepherd after Jesus’ Heart! I’ve never felt like a great success in an atmosphere of mega church (kind of) growth, but after all these years, His provision of Love, caring and patience…gentleness, kindness, and persistence, has been the giftings we’ve needed to Pastor a healthy church family! We would not have made it without the specific giftings that a Pastor, Shepherd must have to endure and succeed! I’m pretty sure, that our Dads were gifted the same …we just didn’t realize the depth of their joy in Obeying The Call of the Great Shepherd.
