ALWAYS NEAR – (A Devotional Thought)

Psalm 23 is a favorite psalm of many. It is used so often as an encouragement during difficult days and moments of loss that it has been affectionately referred to by some as the “funeral psalm.” Moreover, it is a passage that pastors use to help realign the hearts and minds of the grieving or troubled. While it certainly offers strength to the weak at heart and comfort to the grieving, this psalm is really so much more—it stands as a daily reminder of God’s unwavering presence and His nearness to His people.

Psalm 23 (as Hebrew Wisdom Literature), is a trove of beautifully poetic thoughts mixed with deep and symbolic imagery. As is the case with this passage, Hebrew poetry often places its most profound truth at the core or center of its thoughts. Carefully embedded within its verses hides a pearl of hope. As can be seen, here in Psalm 21, King David masterfully penned this psalm to guide us gently toward the central theme of God’s closeness.

Consider the words of Psalm 23 and see if you can find the big idea within. As David put it,:

Did you catch it? The main theme of this psalm is nestled quietly yet powerfully in verse 4, where David proclaims, “for you are with me.”

Amidst life’s ups and downs—both moments of peace and trials of darkness—David learned a crucial truth: GOD IS ALWAYS NEAR!

David experienced both moments of triumph and times of profound despair. Yet, through every situation—whether joyful or difficult—God’s presence remained steadfast and unwavering. This was not just a passing emotion but a steadfast truth he had come to know intimately and with certainty.David did not keep this revelation to himself; instead, he shared it freely with all, including us, so that we too might embrace the comforting truth that we are never alone.

Let this truth settle deeply in your heart today. No matter what challenges or uncertainties lie ahead, take comfort in knowing that your Shepherd—our loving and ever-present God—is walking with you every step of the way.

Reflection:

  • In what ways have you experienced God’s closeness recently?
  • How does recognizing God’s continual presence influence how you handle challenges and setbacks?

Application:

  • Take a few moments today to reflect quietly, acknowledging God’s presence in your life.
  • Invite Him into both your joys and struggles, intentionally recognizing His closeness throughout your day.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for being my constant companion, ever-present in both joy and sorrow. Help me to always sense Your nearness and find peace in Your unwavering love. Amen.
