Preparing for Christmas — Devotion
Scripture Reading:
“Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.”
— Isaiah 40:3 (NIV)
The weeks leading up to Christmas often feel like a whirlwind of activity. Shopping, decorating, and celebrating can leave us so preoccupied that we risk neglecting the spiritual preparation this season invites us to embrace. Isaiah’s call to “prepare the way of the Lord” speaks to more than ancient Israel’s anticipation of the Messiah—it’s an invitation for us to prepare our hearts for Christ today.
Just as we clear clutter to welcome guests into our homes, we are called to make space for Jesus in our lives. What are the distractions, anxieties, or sins that hinder His presence? Advent is a time to reflect, repent, and realign our priorities with His kingdom. When we intentionally create room for Him, we position ourselves to experience the joy and peace He brings.
As we approach Christmas, may we not simply celebrate His birth as a past event but welcome Him into our present reality. Let us prepare our hearts as His dwelling place and ensure He is at the center of our lives.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I thank You for the special gift of Your Son, Jesus. Thank you for sending Him from Heaven to earth — to come and dwell among us. In this season of preparation, help me to discover how to quiet my heart and make room for Him. Reveal the areas in my life that need Your touch, and give us the courage to surrender them to You. May we not be consumed by the busyness of this season but find joy and peace in Your presence. Prepare us to receive Jesus afresh this Christmas, and let His light shine through us to others.
I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Application:
Take time today to reflect on what might be cluttering your heart this season. Consider setting aside a few moments each day this week to read Scripture, pray, or simply be still in God’s presence. Invite the Holy Spirit to help you prepare your heart to fully welcome Jesus.
Reflection Question:
What one step can you take this week to ensure your focus remains on Christ this Christmas?
