Dare to Do Great Things!
Last week I celebrated another birthday, and it stirred something within me. It wasn’t sentiment, but rather a sense of urgency. While I am getting older, I am not interested in counting my years as much as I am interested in counting the impact of my life. Simply put, I refuse to drift or coast through life. I want every day to matter. I want my life to serve a purpose far greater than my own comfort or convenience. I want to build something of value. I want to advance the Kingdom of God. I want to give my life and everything God has placed inside me to to the fulfillment of the mission to which He has assigned me.
We get only one life to live — only one story to write. We’re entrusted with this one and only opportunity to make our days count for the glory of God!
To be clear, we were created with purpose. We aren’t here by accident. God intentionally placed us in this generation to fulfill His purpose. Our lives are not random. Our callings are not small. Our existence is not ordinary. We were created by God to live with purpose, to walk by faith, and to do great things for His glory!
Yet it seems too many people settle for survival when they were born for something more. They hold back rather than give all. They drift through life searching for comfort instead of moving in obedience. They let fear silence their courage. They let comfort weaken their calling. They allow excuses to steal their destiny.
I once heard someone describe life like a candle, noting that its purpose isn’t to simply sit on a shelf and remain preserved and unused, but rather to burn brightly. To give light. To be spent for something that matters. something that makes a difference. I think their point was that the ultimate goal of life isn’t to live cautiously and trying to preserve ourselves. The goal of this life ought to be — to be poured out and used up, using everything that God has placed within us until there is nothing left. The goal must be to leave this life without any reserves. To expend all that’s been given and placed within us, for the glory of God. Living like this isn’t recklessness — it’s God honoring. It’s stewarding well!
It was Henry Varley, who influenced D. L. Moody, who once said:
“It remains to be seen what God will do with a man who gives himself up wholly to Him.”
Jim Elliot (that famous missionary and martyr who became a symbol of courageous faith and sacrificial obedience to God’s call), ironically wrote in his journal:
“I seek not a long life, but a full one, like You, Lord Jesus.”
I believe that now more than ever, that we (those who have been called to shepherd, lead, and influence others), must shake off passivity and refuse small living. The kingdom of God does not advance through comfort. It advances through courage, through men and women who pray big prayers, take bold steps, and dare to do something great for God.
James, the half-brother of Jesus, confronts this passivity head-on. In James 2 he declares,
“Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” — James 2:17
Real faith does not sit still. Real faith refuses to stay safe. Real faith moves. It steps. It builds. It obeys. James continues,
“Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.” — James 2:18
His point is that faith is never measured by passion or emotion. Rather it is proven by our faithful obedience. It is revealed by the risks we take and the steps we choose in response to God’s calling and work in our lives.
The apostle Paul states that we have ask been created for a grand, even divine purpose. In Ephesians 2:10 he writes,
“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” — Ephesians 2:10
So, long before you drew your first breath, before your name was ever spoken on this earth, God had already written a grand and unique purpose over your life. He prepared people only you are meant to reach and positioned opportunities that will require your faith and obedience. Your calling isn’t something you create or manufacture; it’s something you humbly discover and faithfully pursue.
The time we are given is too valuable to waste. Psalm 90:12 says,
“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” — Psalm 90:12
Wisdom understands that life is short and eternity is long. Wisdom refuses to drift because it recognizes that wasted time is neither beneficial to us nor honoring to God. Wisdom knows that what I choose to do today matters more than what I plan to do someday, because tomorrow is never guaranteed.
That same wisdom reminds us that God expects us to be people He can trust with bold assignments. He isn’t searching for perfect people, or popular people, or people who prefer comfort to calling. He is searching for people who are committed to living surrendered lives. He’s looking for men and women who are willing to pray big prayers, and accept grand assignments, and take bold steps of faith for God’s glory. He’s looking for people who refuse to settle for a life that can be lived without God’s empowerment and provision. God is looking for those who are willing to leverage their life, their one and only life for eternal impact.
So, I challenge you today, dare to do something great for God. Embrace the vision. Chase the calling. Take the step. Move forward in obedience. It’s not too late for you to trust in God. You are not too small. You past does not disqualify you from living in the present for God’s glory. You are called. You are chosen. And you are here to live on assignment.
So pray bolder and dream bigger. Refuse the temptation for small living. Step out in faith and move towards the God-sized assignment that He has placed in your heart. Whatever it is — do it. Build it. Preach it. Launch it. Write it. Start it, Lead it. Give toward it. Believe God for it. Attempt something so great for God that it demands His power to accomplish it!
This is not the hour for casual Christianity. This is the hour for courageous faith. The world is desperate for believers who live what they claim to believe.
Your life is a gift. Do not waste it. Live this moment with purpose and DARE TO DO GREAT THINGS for the glory of God.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the life You have given me and for calling me to be part of Your purpose. I do not want to drift through my days or miss what You created me to do. Help me live with purpose and passion for Your glory. Give me courage to dream bigger, the faith to obey You fully, and the strength to follow wherever You lead (without any hesitation). Empower me by Your Spirit to accomplish great things for your glory. And use my life to make a real difference for Your Kingdom. I want to honor You with everything within me. So help me live my life well. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
